How Often Should You Oil Your Scalp

Oiling your scalp comes with many benefits.  Some of them being that it is relaxing, it helps to keep the scalp healthy, is great for head massage which in turn allows for blood to flow to the scalp resulting in new hair growth.  Now, because oiling your scalp will yield all of these wonderful benefits, its easy to go overboard.  You know the saying- “too much of a good thing can be harmful”. Well the same goes for oiling your scalp.  It is best that you know how often you should oil your scalp so that you are taking proper care of your scalp.  Not everyone is the same and will require the same routines.  So, what works for someone else may not work for you.

What Is Best

First, I want to be clear that we are talking about oiling the scalp, NOT “greasing”.  I know that people use the term greasing when they are referring to oiling, but they are not the same.  When the scalp is greased the product being used is grease. Grease is a product that is petroleum and mineral oil based and should never be used.  These are ingredients that should be avoided because they suffocate and dry out the scalp and clogs the pores.  When someone says that they are oiling the scalp they SHOULD be using some type of oil.  Some of these oils maybe olive, coconut, castor, jojoba, grapeseed, etc.  Natural oils provide great nutrients to the scalp, allowing the hair to grow longer and stronger.

How Often Should It Be Done

How often you oil your scalp with these natural ingredients all depends on your hair and how quickly your scalp absorbs and responds to the oil.  For the most part, oiling your scalp about 2-3 times per week should suffice.  This frequency is not too often or too little.  Oiling your scalp 2-3 times per week gives your scalp and hair follicles a chance to absorb the oil, before you add a fresh new layer.  This schedule also works well for most people because it helps to stop the pores from becoming clogged from excessive amounts of oil.

Don't Oil Your Scalp Too Often

If you oil your scalp too often you run the risk of clogging your pores, which will defeat the purpose of oiling your scalp in the first place.  A scalp that has been over oiled will eventually be clogged with dirt, sweat and oils.  When this happens your scalp won’t be able to “breathe” and get the necessary oxygen to grow a healthy head of hair.  You don’t want to reverse the benefits by oiling your scalp too often.  They key is to pay close attention to your hair and scalp to determine if your hair needs more or less oil.

Pay Attention To Your Scalp

Some people loss moisture in their scalp more quickly than others.  If you loss moisture in your scalp quickly and see that your scalp is producing more dandruff, this is a sign that you should oil more often.  Another sign of needing to oil your scalp is if it is itchy.  If you are finding yourself patting and scratching all day long, your scalp is probably dry and needs a bit more moisture.  This can be provided by oiling your scalp with natural and organic oils.

There Is No One Size Fits All

Always do what works best for you and your scalp.  You may know someone who oils their scalp everyday and that may work for them, but that doesn’t mean that it will work for you.  For example, I oil my scalp with our Follicle Awakening Hair Oil about once per week,  For Butta Babee, her scalp is a bit more dry in comparison to mine.  For that reason, I have to oil hers about twice per week.  The key is to listen to your hair, it talks to you lol!  It tells you exactly what it needs at the time it needs it.  I hope that this article has given you a better understanding on how often you should oil your scalp.  As when it is done properly, it can offer many benefits to the hair.
