Hot Oil Treatments

Hot oil treatments are one of the most important steps in caring for your natural hair.  In fact, it isn’t just good for natural hair, it is also great for hair that is relaxed.  Hot oil treatments  have been around for years.  As time moves forward and people become more aware of their hairs health, they will begin to practice this hair care routine more often.  Some who struggle with keeping their hair healthy, don’t understand how important hot oil treatments are, or they simply just don’t know what they are.  This type of hair treatment is effective and can be done at home or even in a salon.  If you have already been doing hot oil treatments than you are on the right track.  If you haven’t, what are you waiting for?!!!  Your hair will thank you for it, trust me!

Why Do Hot Oil Treatments On Natural Hair

There are some naturals that don’t believe in coloring, putting heat on their hair, frequent styling and washing.  You may be a natural that loves to dibble and dabble in your hair so its a must you use this type of treatment for your natural hair.  Washing, detangling, combing, brushing and heat all put strain on the hair and cause damage over time.  There is nothing wrong with doing these things to your hair, but having  a plan of action to keep damage at bay is a must.  This is where your hot oil treatments come in.  They will keep your hair looking healthy and presentable.  Not to mention they have the ability to stimulate hair growth.  Yes, they are that awesome for your natural hair.

How Do Hot Oil Treatments Work On Natural Hair

Hot oil treatments are designed to moisturize and hydrate the hair strands on a deeper level, working from the inside out.  When natural oils are used on the hair as a hot oil treatment they provide a significant amount of vitamins and minerals that are needed to repair each hair strand and nuture it back to health.  Natural oils like grapeseed, coconut, castor, olive, jojoba, etc. contain omega 3 fatty acids.  Omega 3 fatty acids contain anti inflammatory properties, which help to open and expand hair follicles, eventually leading to healthy, new hair growth.  Heat allows for it to expand and your hair will receive all of the benefits that the oils have to offer.

When Should I Do Them?

The is no particular time that hot oil treatments should be done on natural hair.  Natural hair can benefit from this wonderful hair treatment all year around.  However, during the winter and colder months your hair maybe a bit more thirsty and desire more attention.  The cold air and winter clothing can cause damage to the hair.  Firstly, during the winter months the cold air dries out the hair, leaving it weak and brittle eventually leading to breakage.  Beanies, wool coats and sweaters are notorious for this.  To maintain our hairs health, its best that you are consistent with your hot oil treatments.  Aiming to treat your hair every two weeks will suffice.  By doing so you’ll notice how much length you’ll retain and gain, when your maintenance game is on point.

Which Oils Are Best To Use

Always use oils that are of quality.  Quality oils are a bit more expensive  but they are worth it.  Your hair is worth it!  Its best to use oils that are organic and natural.  For intense, Butta Babee’s Hair Follicle Awakening Hair Oil is an organic blend of oils that nourish and help to grow your hair healthy.  Do away with oils that use cheap and synthetic ingredients like soybean, mineral oil and petroleum.  These types of products actually stop moisture from entering the hair and  blocks the hair follicles.  In our oil blend we use olive oil, coconut, flaxseed, castor and a blend of essential oils that help to bring life back to your hair and stimulate blood flow to your scalp.

Applying It to Your Hair

There is a common misconception that hot oil treatments can only be done on freshly washed hair.  Really, its all about what you feel comfortable doing.  I like to do my treatments right before I wash my hair.  My results are just as good as they are when my hair is freshly washed.  Here is how you should apply the oil to your hair.

1. Warm the oil to a temperature that is comfortable enough to apply it to your scalp.  The oil should never be too hot.  Hot oil will burn your scalp, damage the hair cuticles and follicles.  Also, never warm the oil in the microwave because it will kill all of the nutrients in the oil.  Place the oil bottle in warm water and let it sit until the temperature is right for you.

2.  Apply the oil from roots to tips of the hair.  You should also apply the oil to the scalp so that it will soak in to your hair follicles.

3.  Place a plastic cap over your head.  Sit under a heated dryer for 30 minutes,

4. Shampoo as usual with a sulfate free shampoo like Mielle Organics Pomegranate and Honey Shampoo, It’s amazing!  A sulfate free shampoo will not strip the hair of all moisture you have just added after doing the hot oil treatment on your natural hair.
